Due to my long awaited trip to India this Fall, my classes will resume in January 2009. I will be studying Yoga there and so will return to my teaching with new experience and much inspiration!
Watch for new dates & classes in late November.
All classes are rooted in the Kripalu tradition.
Classes begin with warm-ups and centering. Thorough instruction is followed by a gentle flow of postures co-ordinated with breath. Classes end with a meditation and a wonderful relaxation. Smaller, consistent groups of people allow for more individual attention as well as a gentle feeling of Community. Practice is sprinkled with laughter and tea is offered after class.
This class builds on the basics to learn more postures & flows. As we become more familiar and comfortable with the technical details of the alignment of body and breath, we can take our awareness to ever more subtle layers of physical and mental experience. “What and how do I feel in this posture?”
Holding a posture longer allows us not only to strengthen, but to observe both physical and emotional sensations and feelings, re-acquainting ourselves with more subtle awarenesses. This type of learning never ends.
Some classes or sessions may have a special focus such as the pelvis, spine, hips, or a series of sessions on yogic tools for health and well being.

“For the past two and a half years, yoga with Sylvia has been a major element in my successful recovery after suffering two herniated disks in the lumbar region. I’m not sure where I would be today without the patience, understanding and attention to working around my limitations that she has shown in helping me to regain strength and mobility after the injury. In retrospect, I wish I had started yoga 30 years ago.” - Dan Hrebenyk
“It’s hard to put to words how precious these classes are....however I can say Sylvia is a wise and wonderful teacher. I get a good mixture of spirit and strengthening and leave with a deep sense of peace. She helps me cultivate richer subltleties of being. What more could I ask for?” - Sandro Ainsley, Yogic Hair Stylist
Chair Yoga is for anyone who is not comfortable getting up and down from a yoga mat, for any reason. We usually start standing with a few easy movements to loosen up and ‘arrive’. The body of the class is done sitting on a nice solid, armless chair. Many traditional yoga postures are well adapted to the chair. Comfort and enjoyment are most important, and participants are always reminded to move within their own level of comfort.
Emphasis is on lengthening and opening the spine and the chest area. We also do hip openers, hamstring lengtheners and leg strengtheners! Simple breathing techniques are practiced to calm the mind and relax the body. Energy blocks are released, circulation improves, mobility increases, breath deepens and you feel better! Laughter ensues. It is a great group and we have fun!

“This has been my first time with yoga and because of Sylvia’s techniques, I have become a person who will definitely continue with the classes. Sylvia has guided me into a realization and awareness of the power of breathing and gentle exercise of mind and body.” - Rosalie
“I have been taking Sylvia’s yoga classes for 3 years and they have been very beneficial in relieving my tense neck and upper back muscles as well as helping me with my insomnia. I keep coming back for my yoga fix!” - Colleen
Employees and employers will receive many benefits to improve their enjoyment and efficiency in the work place, including stress reduction, both mental and physical, and a clearer, calmer mind for more focused concentration and better working relations.
Classes will include stretching and strengthening of the spine and core muscles and some guidelines for the care of the spine and lower back while at work. The postures combined with some simple breathing techniques release energy blocks and improve circulation and respiratory function...resulting in a sense of calm and well-being. The strengthened immune system reduces absenteeism from work.
Each session closes with a luxurious relaxation. Participants leave feeling fully refreshed.
A suitable space is required. A warm, clean, open space large enough to allow the participants to stretch out.
